10 Fun Family Things to do in Miami

I’ve always wanted to explore Miami but never had the chance. So last week when I went on a cruise that departed from Miami, I took the opportunity to stay a few days in Miami after to finally see what it was all about. I was pleasantly surprised by all there was to do, see and eat. I already feel like I need to go back to see even more and to try even more food! Here is a list of 10 of the top family things to do in Miami.

1- Wynwood Walls

One of my very favorite places in Miami is the Wynwood Walls. I highly recommend going if you are interested in street art at all. The whole Wynwood neighborhood  is really hip and unique and fun to explore. This area is now home to aspiring painters and artists. Wynwood Walls is a collection of giant walls from 6 buildings and now many famous artists from around the globe have work here.

There is a main Wynwood Walls area that is roped off and you can enter and see some amazing pieces. It is also surrounded by restaurants, unique stores and cute frozen Popsicle stands. However, on the outskirts, there are still tons of murals to see. I recommend this tour if you want to learn more about the art, the behind the scenes and see some of the most notable pieces in Wynwood. Otherwise, you are on  you’re own and this area is huge!

2- Ocean Drive

Ocean Drive is the most iconic street in Miami, FL and it was my personal favorite. It is a perfect place for people watching and eating at cute outdoor cafes. You never know when a street party is going to break out! Ocean Drive has some of the most unique architecture I have ever seen. It is a combination of many different types of architecture, but it is most noted for its 1920s and 1930s resort-style architecture.

Ocean Drive stretches from 1st Street all the way until 15th street so there is plenty to do! You definitely have to come back at night when it’s all lit up with fancy cars driving around and tons of nightlife!

3- See the 8th Magic Mountain

You might be familiar with the Seven Magic Mountains, but did you know there is an 8th Magic Mountain in Miami? It’s located in Collins Park outside of the Contemporary Art Museum called the Bass. When Rondinone, the artist, first visited the square in Miami Beach, he noticed there was an absence of color beyond the tropical  greens, so he sought to contribute a palette of neon rainbow for this commissioned work.

4- See a Wooly Mammoth at Faena

The Faena Hotel is one of the coolest and most luxurious hotels in all of South Beach. It is definitely worth staying here if you are ready for a grandiose experience. If you don’t stay here, it is at least worth a visit to one of their restaurants. Then you can see the amazing designs in the lobby and the courtyard and of course, the famed gold wooly mammoth.

The Faena Hotel also has this incredible restaurant inside. I loved the design so much!

5- The Edition Bowling Alley

Need a break from the heat? Look no further than this cool retro bowling alley in the basement of The Edition hotel. This is definitely a fun place to spend an afternoon beating the heat.

There are cool neon lights everywhere and there is also a fun retro ice skating rink as well! Definitely a highlight when looking for family things to do in Miami.

6- Hang out and eat tacos at Broken Shaker

The Broken Shaker is an outdoor café and bar located on the Freehand Hotel property. By the way, the Freehand Hotel is a perfect place to stay in Miami, FL if you are on a budget. They even have hostel style dorm rooms in some areas. Plus you get a swimming pool in an amazing jungle type setting.

The Broken Shaker is located near this pool. I came here in the afternoon to have a little break from the scorching heat and I had some pork street tacos that were very good and a lemonade. This property is really beautiful and a great place to take pictures because there are cute spots all over the place. I even found some street art on the property. Plenty of things to do.

7- Visit Espanola Way

One of the things I love about Miami is all of the different cultures you can find in this city and all of the delicious cuisine. Espanola Way is Miami’s Historic Spanish Village founded clear back in the 1920s.

It is a two-block corridor between Washington and Pennsylvania Avenue. It was designed to feel like the Mediterranean villages of Spain and France. There are cute hanging lights everywhere and this place is just absolutely filled with charm. This is a perfect place to stop for lunch!

8- Hang out at Miami Beach

Miami Beach is one of the most beautiful beaches I have been to in the United States. The ocean there is a Caribbean blue and it is definitely worth spending at least one afternoon hanging out. One of my favorite parts of Miami Beach, were all of the lifeguard huts.

They were vibrant blues and pinks, all with different designs and colors. It was fun to see how many different ones we could spot. The beach is a great place to hang out for sunset, even though the sun technically doesn’t set over the ocean. The sky will still be cotton candy pink and it has finally cooled down. There are even people walking around selling pizzas so grab yourself one and enjoy the evening!

9- Ride Bikes on the Boardwalk

A really fun way to see Miami is by bike! The city has bike stalls all over the place where you can rent them and then return them at another one when you are done. The boardwalk area and Wynwood seem like particularly fun places to ride a bike!

10- Day Trips

As fun as Miami, is, if you are going to be there for 4 days or more, I recommend taking a day trip! There are actually so many fun options and things to do! You can head to the everglades and spot alligators, spend the day in Key West, or my personal favorite option, head on a ferry boat ride to the Bahamas to swim with the pigs!!
